10 Beauty Hacks using Essential Oils

I remember walking into a store of essential oils while on one of my shopping trips in Singapore. The difference between what I felt a few minutes before and literally seconds after entering the store, was just so stark! The aroma of their calming blend immediately put me at ease. That was enough to have me sold on these tiny bottles of wonder. 10 beauty hacks using essential oils

But if that wasn’t enough, the woman who walked up to me from behind the counter, a 40+ and very graceful, had this glowing beautiful skin. She was the visiting aromatherapist who would come into the store for facial appointments. Her skin and her presence both were reminiscent of ‘royalty’. That’s when I knew that essential oils are some of the best skin care and natural beauty tools that we could use as laymen (or rather lay girls!).

Essential Oils are basically nature’s goodness packed in tiny bottles.

These are derived from aromatic plant extracts and are beneficial in a variety of ways for our mental, emotional and physical well-being. They can help you relax and rejuvenate, sleep well, treat seasonal ailments and improve your skin and hair. Here are a few amazing ways in which essential oils are beneficial for skin and hair.

  1. Homemade facial scrub– Add a few drops of lavender oil to rolled oats, or sugar, for a nice smoothing scrub.
  2. Dry or chapped skin and lips – Rub a few drops of Lavender oil on dry or chapped skin and lips.
  3. Bye Bye Blemishes – Mix 5 drops tea tree oil with 1 tablespoon of raw honey and use as a wash for reducing blemishes. This helps in reducing acne too.
  4. Lustrous hair – Mix two drops each of lemon, peppermint, and lavender essential oils with one ounce of a carrier oil—olive oil or almond oil. Massage the mixture into your scalp, allowing it to soak for as little as 15 minutes and as long as overnight. Shampoo and condition as usual and enjoy a healthier scalp.
  5. Get Rid Of Suntan – Mix Aloe Vera gel with several drops of lavender essential oil in a bottle and keep in the fridge. Apply as required on the sun-baked skin. beauty hacks 2
  6. Dry cracked feet – Add 3 drops of lavender oil to 2 tbsp of coconut oil. Apply to feet at night and put on socks. Wake up to smooth beautiful feet.
  7. Foot bath – Add a few drops of lemon or eucalyptus oil to a large bowl of warm water and dip your feet to soothe them. It relaxes you and helps you sleep better.
  8. Relaxing Bath – For a relaxing spa-like bath, mix 1-3 drops of eucalyptus essential oil into a carrier oil like coconut, almond, or jojoba and pour the mixture into a hot bath before stepping in. Inhaling the strong aroma can alleviate respiratory troubles, and promote relaxation.
  9. Lemon TonerIn a small spray bottle add ½ tbsp. lemon juice, 1 ½ cups distilled water, and 1-2 drops lemon essential oil. Shake the ingredients well and place the bottle in the fridge and use when needed. This lemon toner stays good for 1-2 weeks.
  10. For Dandruff, dry scalp–Supercharge your shampoo to get rid of dandruff. Add 10 drops of tea tree oil to an eight ounce (236 ml) bottle of organic shampoo. Shake bottle gently before each use.

Important: If you have particularly sensitive skin, or when applying essential oils on children, it is a good idea to use carrier oils like Coconut, Jojoba, Almond or another oil of your choice. By diluting the essential oil with a carrier oil, you can avoid the development of skin sensitivity, especially when you are trying new oil for the first time.

The recommended ratio for dilution is typically three drops of carrier oil for every single drop of essential oil.

This Is Exactly How We Bring a Herb/Plant In Your Palms

Do you want to know how these pint sized powerhouses made it into your hands, with all the potent benefits that Mother Nature has to offer?

Let’s dig a little deeper on HOW ESSENTIAL OILS ARE MADE.

Farm to Distillary - Farm Pic 1

I have observed time and time again when people start using Essential Oils they have a keen interest to know how these pint sized powerhouses are made. People have been writing to me to know more about what goes into making of these wonderful oils. Instead of answering these questions individually I thought I would write a blog post  so that everyone can learn a little bit more about what happens behind the scenes. (Quite excited to take you behind the scenes)

Various methods are used to make Essential Oils today we will discuss a few methods that are commonly used to make oils.

The one thing common in all Essential oils, is that all  are made through the process of distillation. There are several specific ways to distill essential oils: steam distillation, water distillation, a combination of the two and a method called cold pressing that is used for citrus oils.

Distilling essential oils is an art and a science!

It is an Art because each plant is unique and each herb needs to be handled differently, great amount of prep work is  needed to prepare the herbs for distillation. Different method of distillation may be required for different kind of herbs. We need to choose the best method for a particular herb so that the result is  an essential oil which is of the highest standard.

It is a science because we need to understand how the process works from start to finish, from the time a plant is put into a machine to the time it comes out as an essential oil. It requires you to be vigilant through the process of distillation. You need to make sure the temperature is perfect, the time of operation is perfect. Distillation is quite a technical process  if you falter in this step then the results can be very different.

The art and science of proper distillation  is what creates an oil which is pure and one that promotes good health.  This is what we strive for with all The Balance Mantra essential oils.

Different Grade of Essential Oils :

  • Grade A: is regarded as therapeutic grade essential oil. They are regarded as the purest oil one can purchase and can be used in the largest variety of ways. ( All Balance Mantra Oils are Grade A)

  • Grade B: Food grade Essential Oil. This grade can be used in food but may not be free of additives. ( We don’t promote the use of Essential Oils Internally)
  • Grade C: Similar to oils we see in perfume or cosmetics.
  • Grade D: is simply floral water. (Rose Water, Scented Waters are mostly Bi -products of the distillation process)

Steam distillation is one of the oldest methods of extracting essential oils and it remains even today as the most favorable method of extracting essential oil.  If oils are extracted by any any other method apart from steam distillation or cold expression then it is not a therapeutic grade essential oil. All our oils are extracted using Steam Distillation process.

1Steam distillation 2

In all of the methods of steam distillation, steam is used to rupture the oil membranes in the plant and release the essential oil.

What is Water Distillation?

This method is where the plant material is placed in boiling water. The steam and oils are captured and then separated out to produce the essential oil. Clove essential oil is collected using water distillation.

What is Water/Steam Distillation?

This method is where steam and water are pushed around and though the plant material. And then the steam and oils are captured and then separated out to produce the essential oil. Nutmeg oil is collected using this method!

What is Straight Steam Distillation Method?

Distilling essential oils using the straight steam method involves pushing steam through the plant material and then picking up the essential oil. Lavender essential oil is distilled in this manner!

Cold Pressed Distillation

This method is also sometimes called expression and is commonly used to distill citrus oils such as lemon and tangerine.

Beginners Guide To Essential Oils

I am assuming you  have heard a lot about essential oils and are wondering what they are all about and how can you  incorporate them into your life !

Does that sound like you?

If you answered yes then we are a good match!

I would like to take you on this journey of discovering all that you need to know about these pint sized powerhouses . These little bottles have a power to transform your lives ( in a good way I PROMISE)

So  let’s get to work and talk about what exactly are Essential Oils ?

An essential oil is a liquid that is mostly distilled from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots or other elements of a plant.

In contrary to what the name suggests it isn’t oily at all, YES  you heard it right they are not greasy at all. They are mostly clear or sometimes yellow in colour. They are termed “Essential” because the oils contain the true essence of the plant it was derived from.

The oil always  bears the name of the plant from which it is derived from for example, Lavender  oil  (hint: they are derived from lavender ) J. Exception to these are Oil blends which are two or more oils mixed together and they may have a different name given to the blend we have named some of our blends De Congest, De Stress for example.

A very Indian example is “laung  ka tail “it is the same as Clove Essential Oil… yes they are the same thing. Remember our grand moms and moms telling us  “daat me dard hai to long ka tail lagao. (apply oil of clove if you have a tooth ache) If you’re thinking at this point that toothache is the only possible issue you can resolve with essential oils, then allow me to share some awesome information with you. Let’s continue

Essential oils, Fragrant Oil or Perfume oil are not the same thing. Essential Oils are derived from the true plants, perfume oils are artificially created fragrances and contain artificial substances and do not offer the therapeutic benefits that essential oils offer. Hence they are cheaper then Essential Oils.

Use of essential oils for medicinal purposes is not new, they have been used for ages as they help immensely but without the side effects of the over the counter drugs which we reach for more often these days. (I know it’s sad but true). Interest in essential oils has revived in recent decades thanks to the popularity of aromatherapy.

Now let’s come to the next possible question you may have, how are they made ?

Steam distillation is the most common method of extracting essential oils from the plant.

Steam distillation yields a very “pure” form of essential oil, in that only water and low heat are used in the extraction process. (This is the exact process we use for all our essential oils )

Essential oils are highly concentrated oils that have a strong aroma and are very powerful, a little goes a long way and LESS is more when it comes to essential oils.

Did you know it takes approximately 50 rose flowers to create just a single drop of Rose oil!

So what are the BENEFITS of using Essential oils and why should you use them you may ask. I’ve got you covered.

Essential oils can provide both psychological and physical benefits.

They can be used as single essential oils or in complex essential oil blends depending on desired benefit you want.

Some of the many ways in which Essential Oils benefit us are:

  • Inducing Sleep
  • Stress Relief
  • Sinus and Breathing relief
  • Calming your Mind
  • Shield’s against Mosquitos and Flies
  • Fights against Cold, Flu and Asthma
  • Relief for Migraine and Head Pain

If by now you’re thinking, ‘I want to use them right away!’ you’re in the right place lets quickly dive in How to use Essential Oils?

There are two main ways of using these mighty oils.

  • Aromatic – Inhaling the aroma

There is great evidence that essential oils are absorbed into the bloodstream when inhaled. The large amount of blood vessels in the lungs absorb the oils and then circulate them throughout the body.

Some simple ways of inhaling:

  • Putting a few drops on your pillow is a very effective way
  • Put a few drops in your handkerchief and inhale out of that through the day
  • Steam Inhalation – put a few drops in hot water and inhale
  • Diffusion is one of the simplest methods for using essential oils aromatically

2 )  Topical – Applying on the body

Topical application is a very effective method for applying essential oils. Because essential oils have low molecular weights and are lipid soluble, they easily penetrate the skin.

Diluting the essential oil is a very common and a very good way of using essential oils.

Dilution is a process in which Essential Oils are mixed with a carrier oil – say Coconut, Olive or Almond Oil. An oil aids in carrying the product onto the skin. Diluting the oil increases the benefits of the Essential Oil as it increases the surface area of absorption.

Essential oils can be mixed with most of the skincare items like the Shampoo, Conditioner, Serum or a Moisturizer.

So are you ready to buy a bottle of this little gem …. sure go ahead but a few things to keep in mind.

Essential Oils are usually sold for individual use in very small bottles example 5 ml, 10 ml, 15 ml.

Essential oils should IDEALLY be stored in dark glass bottles, never buy Oils sold in plastic packaging because they lose their benefits very quick if they are in plastic containers. We sell our oils only in dark glass bottles.

Essential oils can often be purchased as standalone oils or as blends of several essential oils. You can buy a few standalone oils and mix it in on your own for a desired blend or buy a premade blend for a specific purpose. We sell both Blends as well as standalone oils.

Essential oils should only be stored in a cool, dark place. So your drawer is a better choice than an open shelf.

Applying or consuming high concentration of essential oils can be dangerous, as I said earlier less is more when it comes to essential oils.

Hope all this information helps you to start incorporating Essential oils in your day to day life!
